The idea of men wearing waistcoats today seems rather non-existent men do not tend to wear them unless they are attending a wedding or some sort of other similar formal occasion, or of course those unflattering, heavily patterned monstrosities that are often seen on BBC 2s dull snooker players!
A male co-worker (and avid supporter of the waistcoat!) suggested I write about the topic which I did find slightly daunting but after his eagerness and assurance that they are the way forward, I started to believe that maybe a man may know something about mens fashion that I perhaps had not considered!
It may well be true, waistcoats which were more commonly worn about fifty years ago may be making a comeback – after all, if men can wear a cardigan and make it look good, they should have no problems with a waistcoat! Again guys, we are not talking about your great granddads age old number in the attic, or the one you wore as best man last year (which still has the puke down the side that you maintain you cant see) so you will have to fork out for a brand spanking new one!
The most fashionable trends consist of wearing a plain coloured waistcoat in a casual way. Fashion designers this spring have featured the man waistcoat by layering more than one casually over each other but if this is too trendy for you men reading this, then a plain coloured waistcoat can be worn over a plain white t-shirt as seen at Krus Van Assche this Spring, which is just as sexy especially as it is so laid back and has a fit chest on show!
Another way is to dress up the waistcoat slightly, a look that I have noticed on celebrities more and more recently. Singer Lemar was seen wearing a waistcoat over a satin shirt during his performance at the BIC in Bournemouth (steer clear of the satin if you have a few rolls you want to remain hidden), whilst I noticed Vernon Kay and Jason Donovan on television, sporting similar looks. If you are blessed with an oval face and don’t fancy having bits of hair hanging in your eyes, thank Natalie Portman and Kirsten Dunst for bringing in the short, boyish look. For longer hair; the choppy, messy, incredibly stylish razor cut is back, in various formats. Go for face-framing layers around the ears, and experiment with natural-hold gels and waxes for texture. If you prefer one-length hair to choppy layers, the sleek, straight look is also going to be popular this year. Dig out those straighteners and flatten those curls.
Makeup comes in two accent colours this year: blue and lilac. The ‘cats eye’ look is coupled with a dramatic use of colours on the lid. Try Bourjois Petite Guide to Style in Fleur Bleue for a dark smoky look. Eyebrows are heading away from the pencil-thin line and towards the more natural, 80’s style. But keep them tidy; you want Brooke Shields not Noel Gallagher.
Fashion for men in 2008 is just as daring, if not quite as bright. The ultimate fashion item for men this spring is the cardigan. Muted shades of beige, grey, and the ever-present black are the colours to go for, and they suit everyone. But if you want to make a bold statement, check out the print that’s in this season; plaid. Either bold print trousers or on a belt, plaid is ‘in’ this spring.
And for the warmer weather, don’t forget the humble shorts. Short shorts are popular for men this season, especially when combined with shirt, tie and jacket. but don’t go too overboard with the colours; khaki, off-white and black are the safest combinations for this relatively new look.
Black is one of this season’s colours; go for summery clothing such as short sleeves and shorts in light materials, and avoid the gothic ensemble of heavy materials and baggy trousers. Or, if you dislike wearing dark clothing, opt for the other ‘in’ colour; pink. Salmon, baby or even bright fuschia, traditional styles are given a modern twist in varying shades of pink. Again, stick to relatively traditional clothing when wearing this somewhat flamboyant colour, and you won’t go far wrong.
So what should you avoid in 2008? Fashion faux pas include wide belts, tiny bags, baby doll dresses and bare legs. Solid colours are a no-no, as are metallic ensembles. A little bling is fine on accessories, but try to avoid looking like you’ve wrapped yourself in tinfoil. In your make-up bag, throw out all those coloured eyeliners and clear lipglosses and avoid the smoky-eye look during the day.

Well, that’s because it is, I just don’t have the energy to do anything else. I am so tired by the time I finish work that all I can think about is squidging my bum onto the sofa and putting my feet up…even though I sit down all day anyway. I don’t get it, why am I so tired when I literally only have to lift a few fingers? I wondered if I was doomed to live the rest of my life this way…through the television that showed me pictures of other people’s lives.
Sick of staying in, I prized myself off the sofa, put my coat on and headed out for a walk. The evening was at the stage just before is starts to become dark. The air was fresh and there was a light breeze smoothing back my hair, circling round my neck.
I pushed my hands deeper into my pockets and made my way down the path leading down the cliff where I lived, stretching towards the beach at the bottom of the valley. I could see the blue grey sea in front of me framed my the lane of bushes at my sides, orange and yellow flowers protruding out of the leaves creating a soft mellow scent.
I had forgotten how beautiful the coastal path was, taking for granted that it was just outside my front door. I emerged out of the bush lined walkway and out onto the broken concrete stretch that paved its way down the cliff, the path was so potholed it was practically rubble and my Ugg boots crunched over the loose stones.
I thought about all the times that I had walked down this path during my life and the different things that I had been feeling, all gone now like the wind that flipped through my hair on it’s journey over the hill. I though about the times I had sat on the rickety wooden bench and stared out over the valley at the harbour, wondering about the current dilemma in my life and how things were going to turn out.
Everyone has a route to themselves, a drive, a place or a walk that has been host to moments of change or growing up. A place you go after an argument or just to escape, somewhere you walked with someone when you were falling in love or a place you went when you said goodbye.
Reminded that I didn’t always spend every night sat in front of the TV and that life still has some exciting twists and turns to throw me along the way I turned back towards the house. I knew that whatever lull I was in now there would always be some twists and turns to throw me along the way. For now, sitting in front of Coronation Street would be good enough for me.
